Listen Up!

An interdisciplinary arts learning tool for the whole school!

The Model

Elementary students school-wide begin every day listening to five minutes of classical music. The same passage is repeated for a week, to changing introductory narrations and related follow-up activities that guide listening, provide valuable insight, and promote further learning. The complete, five-year curriculum covers the work of more than 30 composers across 400 years of history.

Listen Up is designed for school-wide implementation by classroom teachers. No prior music experience is required. The curriculum provides teachers with the tools to utilize classical music listening to jumpstart a wide range of related activities aligned with Common Core speaking and listening standards.

Listen Up is not traditional music instruction, nor intended to replace it; rather, the program uses the introduction of classical music as a vehicle for wide-ranging interdisciplinary learning.

Listen Up is based on curricula successfully implemented in over 2,500 schools throughout the US and Canada, including 17,000 students in neighboring New Bedford. It is aligned with Rhode Island Grade Span Expectations (GSEs) in the Arts – covering artistic processes, cultural contexts, communication, and aesthetic judgment – and supports Common Core speaking and listening standards.
